Provenance
Provenance:The Estate of Peter L. Rosenberg, Wilton, Connecticut.Skinner's Auction, April 26, 2014, Asian Works of Art, lot 172, Boston, Massachusetts.Property from the Collection of David Billings and Beverly Hall Billings, Nantucket, Massachusetts.Peter L. Rosenberg was the longtime owner and director of Vallin Galleries, a respected dealer of fine Asian art for over six decades. The gallery traces its origins to a lampshade and lamp store founded by his mother, Josephine Vallin Rosenberg, on Tenth Street in New York’s Greenwich Village. She gained early recognition for transforming antique Chinese porcelain vases into elegant lamps. As Josephine's interest in Asian art deepened, she established Vallin Galleries in Wilton, Connecticut, in 1951. Peter, along with his wife and business partner Louise Rosenberg, expanded the gallery into a trusted source of Chinese, Japanese, and other Asian works of art for major museums, collectors, and dealers. Today, many artworks that pass through the auction market proudly bear the Vallin Galleries provenance, a testament to the Rosenbergs' discerning eye and lasting influence in the field of Asian art.Illustrated:HYLAND, R.
